“Surah Waqiah is only about punishment and Hellfire.” This is inaccurate — the surah gives extensive, detailed descriptions of Paradise for both the Foremost and the Companions of the Right, alongside its warnings for those who deny the Hereafter. It is a balanced description of both outcomes, not a one-sided warning.

“You need wudu even to recite Surah Waqiah from memory.” Verse 79’s instruction about purity is understood by most scholars to apply specifically to touching the physical Mus’haf, not to reciting from memory without touching a copy. Reciting Quran from memory without wudu is generally permitted, though reciting in a state of wudu remains the better practice.

Wazifa Guidance: What Can Be Said With Confidence

A well-known narration states that whoever recites Surah Al-Waqiah every night will never be afflicted by poverty. This belief is widespread, and many people search for Surah Waqiah specifically because of it. However, many hadith scholars classify the chain of this narration as weak (da’if), and some scholars describe it as a statement from a companion, Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (رضی اللہ عنہ), advising his own household, rather than an authenticated saheeh hadith directly from the Prophet ﷺ. Because of this, it should not be treated as a guaranteed, automatic formula for wealth.

What can be said with confidence, directly from the surah’s own text, is this: verses 57–74 firmly establish Allah as the sole creator and sustainer of everything a person depends on for provision — food, water and fire — and verse 82 warns against denying gratitude for one’s rizq. The safest and most beneficial practice is to recite this surah — like the rest of the Quran — with understanding, sincerity and correct tajweed, combined with sincere dua, tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and lawful, practical effort, rather than treating any single surah as a substitute for these.
